Understanding Hiking Times

The hiking times indicated on this website, as well as on the signposts you will find along the Tour du Mont Blanc, refer to actual walking times.

In other words, they do not include breaks or meal stops.

These are average times, achievable by anyone in good health, walking at a normal pace, and used to regular hiking.

It is, however, very important to note that the weight of your backpack is a key factor in whether or not you can keep to these timings.

Everyone should assess their own pace in relation to the commonly accepted calculation standards, and adjust their own time estimates accordingly.

Time calculations

Ascent: about 300 meters of elevation gain per hour

Descent: about 450 meters of elevation loss per hour (this may reach up to 500 meters per hour on easy ground, away from mountain trails)

Flat or gently sloping terrain: about 3.5 km per hour on a trail (this may reach 4 to 4.2 km per hour on easy terrain such as a track or road section)

Plan your hike wisely : aim below your maximum capacity, and always allow a safety margin for the unexpected. Enjoy your hike on the Tour du Mont Blanc !
